At some point, your dentist may tell you that you or your child should get braces or some other orthodontic procedure. Many such procedures are followed by the use of a retainer to make sure that your teeth stay in their new positions. That retainer will need the proper care in order to serve you well.
A fixed retainer has been placed behind your teeth with dental cement by your dentist. You should brush and floss your fixed retainer when you brush and floss your teeth. You may have some difficulty flossing around your retainer, and you should talk with your orthodontist about using a floss threader or a water flosser. Removable retainers should be gently scrubbed with a soft-bristled toothbrush in a vinegar and water solution. You should also soak your retainer in a denture solution to keep it clean and moist.
If you receive your removable retainer, you will also get a case in which to keep it. If you need to remove your retainer and are not going to soak it, it should be placed in that container. If you take out your retainer during a meal, it should go into the case so it does not get thrown out. If you take it out for sports or recreation, it should go into the container. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of keeping your case in your pocket, purse, briefcase or backpack. A lost or damaged retainer can be very difficult to replace. If you lose or damage your retainer, you should contact your orthodontist right away.
