Are you aware of the oral health condition known as bruxism? Often going undetected, bruxism is caused by unknowingly grinding and gnashing your teeth, often while unconscious. One common symptom of bruxism is snoring. As such, ask your sleeping partner or roommate if they have ever noticed that you snore or grind your teeth while you sleep. Take note though, just because you snore does not mean you have bruxism.

The symptoms you exhibit when you wake up could also be an indicator of bruxism. Do you ever find yourself waking up with a sore jaw or increased tooth sensitivity? Has your mouth ever had difficulties fully opening and closing after waking up? If so, you may be suffering from another oral health condition known as a TMJ disorder. Keep in mind that TMJ disorders are often linked with bruxism. If you have any wear or tissue loss on the insides of your cheeks after waking, or if your teeth are beginning to look dull and flat, you may have bruxism.
