Do you have a gap in your smile that you wish weren’t there? A bridge may be the right solution for you. Bridges are a permanent prosthetic device that may be recommended if you are missing one or more teeth and are cemented onto the neighboring teeth. Without filling in the gap, the remaining teeth could shift or rotate which could throw off your bite. This misalignment could result in a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or gum disease.

The bridge may take two or more visits to the dentist to complete. Crowns are placed on the neighboring teeth, called abutments, to serve as anchors for the bridge. A faux tooth, called a pontic, will be attached to the crowns covering the abutments. But first, your dentists may have to make an impression of your teeth so that a custom bridge can be made that is perfect for you. A temporary bridge may be created to protect the abutment teeth in the meantime.

While bridges are designed to last several years, or even a lifetime, they can become loose or fall out. If a problem arises, you can contact Planet Dental and schedule an appointment. A good way to protect their lifespan is to have good oral hygiene. Be sure to keep your gums and teeth healthy.
